Festo Pneumatics > Festo actuators bring massive energy savings in St. Petersburg
Festo Pneumatic automation technology is helping St. Petersburg, the largest country in the world with their drinking water, by providing them with energy efficient solutions for their new water treatment plants.
St. Petersburg has a population of more than a million invited Festo to help implement a programme to reduce production cost of drinking water for its southern areas.
St. Petersburg have invested 2.6 billion roubles over three years to increase their energy efficiency. In addition to modernising thirty four pumping stations, Vodokanal Saint Petersburg water utility companies has set itself the task of reducing power consumption for drinking water supply by a third. Until now Festo electric drives we the first choice for Russia’s water treatment plants for opening and closing the inlets and outlets of sand bed filters in pumping stations. In St Petersburg, the use of only Festo electric drives meant an installed load of 75Kw. The plant could not have supplied this without an additional power supply. However when they visited a trade fair that Festo were present at, they became aware of the energy efficient solutions that could be achieved using Festo DAPS range of pneumatic actuator. Festo pneumatic systems with actuators DAPS range , could include two air compressors and only required a load of 10Kw. By replacing their old electric actuators with 120 of Festos new pneumatic actuators they were able to save a lot of money.
In St. Petersburg inside their Surface Water Treatment plant their new block the K-6 were fitted with twenty new sand bed filters. Each filter tanks was assigned six units with actuators and shut off valves to open and close the inlets and outlets. In additions to units consisting of actuators, shut-off valves and sensor boxes, Festo had supplied these ready to install, Voidokanal had chosen ready to install control cabinets from Festo, that included Festo valve terminals VTSA range, as well as Festo pressure and flow sensors and service units from the Festo MS series. A truly one stop solution was provided by Festo, all designed, assembled and tested made for a problem free installation.
At the heart of the new water treatment plant is with central control systems at the process control level and allows comprehensive monitoring of the water treatment process . Festo control system gathers current data and compares this continuously with defined set points. The automation technology from Festo is fully integrated into this monitoring process and uses sensor signals to supply up to date information on the operating status of individual plant sections.
This new block provides 350,000 cubic metres of drinking water and conforms to the highest modern standards with regards to filter technology and chemical treatment with ozone. The pneumatic automation by Festo that has been installed in the new block allows the water company to achieve a huge leap in energy efficiency, thanks to the help of Festo products.
In this case a huge range of benefits were gained by using Festo energy efficient pneumatics:
• The 100 pre assembled DAPS pneumatic actuators coupled with sensor boxes enabling the opening and closing of the valves
for the 18 sand-bed filters in a very energy efficiency way with a low power consumption.
• The control cabinets were delivered and assembled as a complete unit ready to install, designed, assembled and
tested by Festo.
• The MS Series VTSA guarantees reliable operating cycles and robust built to last fit and forget technology.
• Festo pneumatic actuators come in different sizes mainly from stock available in most cases on a next day basis.
